Welcome to the first HLBWS monthly meeting of the 2024-2025 program year! We have a great program in store: Marvels of Bird Migration in Central Texas, presented by Jordan Weingarten. He will discuss what is meant by the term migration; why birds migrate; how birds know when and where to migrate; and how they manage to undertake the long, arduous journey. He will show specific examples of various migratory birds that we have in Central Texas (including birds that spend the summer here, spend the winter here, or just pass through on their way to their breeding or wintering grounds).
Jordon Weingarten moved to Houston in 1967. He majored in Chemistry at Rice University and attended medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He is a practicing Pulmonary & Critical Care Physician in Austin with a passion for birds, birding, and bird conservation. Jordon is on the Speakers Bureau for Travis Audubon and guides monthly beginner bird walks at Commons Ford Ranch Metropolitan Park in Austin for Travis Audubon. Also, since July 2024, he has been on the Board of Directors of Travis Audubon.
Doors to the auditorium will open at 9:30 a.m. for social time and light refreshments. The business portion of the meeting will start at 10:00 a.m., during which one key item of business will be the adoption of HLBWS’s yearly budget. Jordan Weingarten will begin his presentation immediately after the business portion of the agenda. Anyone interested in learning more about migration is welcome to attend.
Weather permitting, there will be a pre-meeting bird walk, starting at 8:00 a.m., at Haley Nelson Park off of Highway 29 in Burnet.
