“A Tribute to a Texas Naturalist: Greg Lasley,” HLBWS Monthly Meeting

  • Fellowship Hall, Trinity Episcopal Church 909 Avenue D Marble Falls, TX, 78654 United States (map)

Dr. Chuck Sexton will offer a personal overview of the career of his late friend, Greg Lasley, who was a world-class wildlife photographer, one of the top birders in Texas, and a recognized expert on other types of fauna, such as dragonflies and damselflies. Greg traveled all over Texas, and to many destinations around the world, to encounter and document wildlife. Chuck will touch on Greg’s career as a birding trip leader, their shared travels around Texas, and Greg’s diverse interests beyond birding. These included Greg’s significant contributions to iNaturalist in his later years. Greg Lasley’s legacy lives on in his photographs and contributions to the study of natural history in Texas and beyond.

Dr. Sexton’s focus in graduate school was the impacts of urbanization on birds. With Greg Lasley, Chuck was the Texas regional editor for American Birds for many years. He worked in the City of Austin’s Environmental Department for a decade developing the Balcones Canyonlands Conservation Plan. Dr. Sexton then worked for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for 16 years as the biologist at the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge. In his retirement, Dr. Sexton continues birding, traveling, and remains an inveterate user of eBird and iNaturalist. Dr. Sexton is featured in the May 2024 edition of Texas Parks and Wildlife, weighing in on the best bird to represent Texas.
