TMNTuesdays: “Plastic Free July: A Project Highlight”

  • Highland Lakes Birding and Wildflower Society P.O. Box 386 Spicewood, TX 78669 USA (map)

John O’Connell, who is the Brazoria County Extension Agent and Cradle of Texas TMN Advisor, will talk about the Texas Monofilament Recovery and Recycling Program, how it got started, how the chapter is involved and where others can get involved in their local waterways with collecting monofilament lines. Monofilament is fishing line, and when not properly disposed of, the used line can be harmful to marine wildlife and boat motors. Birds and animals cannot see monofilament fishing line, so it is easy for them to become tangled in it and starve, drown or lose a limb. In addition to Mr. O’Connell’s talk, the Galveston Bay Area Chapter will discuss their process for reestablishing their Beach Cleanup Events, which are a great way to promote active involvement in supporting the environment while enjoying social time in the outdoors.
