Earth Kind Principles

This month, members and guests will be treated to a timely, informative presentation about Earth Kind Principles by Burnet County’s AgriLife Extension Agent, Kelly Tarla. According to plantmaps.com, 19% of Texas is still under drought conditions and 8% is abnormally dry, including the Texas Hill Country. Although this area experienced devastating flooding in July, the aquifers have been stressed since September 2021, when the current drought began. The area also has experienced an increased demand for water due to expansive residential and commercial development.

Kelly will focus on how anyone can make a difference by adopting smart practices. Earth Kind landscaping principles, developed by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, focus on the creation of beautiful, low-maintenance landscapes while conserving water and protecting the environment. These principles emphasize water conservation, reduced use of fertilizers and pesticides, and minimizing landscape waste. Key aspects include selecting appropriate plants, using efficient irrigation, improving soil health, and employing integrated pest management.

Kelly Tarla has served as the Burnet County Agriculture Extension Agent for 10 years. She grew up in Van Alstyne, TX, and attended Tarleton State University, studying Agriculture Services and Development. She received her bachelor’s degree in 2001 and her master’s degree in 2003. She has taught Agriculture in the Higgins, Florence, and Academy school districts, and also previously served as an Extension Agent in Blanco County for 3 years.

Meeting room doors open at 9:30 a.m. for social time and light refreshments. The business meeting starts at 10:00 a.m., and the presentation starts immediately after the business meeting.

If the weather permits, there will be a pre-meeting bird walk at 8:00 a.m. at Haley Nelson Park in Burnet.
