Christmas Bird Count, Balcones Canyonlands Wildlife Refuge

  • Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge (map)

The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) at Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge (BCNWR) has enjoyed steady growth in participation over the past few years. This has contributed to an increase in the count of species at BCNWR in that same time span. has continued to climb as well. The CBC is the longest running wildlife census in the world and provides critical data on bird population trends and movements. The Balcones CBC is sponsored by the Friends of Balcones Canyonlands NWR. The geographic circle being surveyed includes all the tracts of the BCNWR and surrounding area. The large area means that Friends need many birders of all skill levels to adequately survey the birds. The Friends would especially like to have some feeder watchers this year. If you live within the circle and have bird feeders, you can still join in on the fun! Please visit the Friends of Balcones website to see the target areas and find out more about this year’s CBC.
